With the continued threat of COVID-19, governments around the world are increasing efforts to manage the spread. In many communities, this means quickly expanding contact tracing capabilities. In May, the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University launched a free online COVID-19 Contact Tracing course on Coursera, which is helping train thousands of urgently needed contact tracers across the globe.
To make this critical content more accessible to the more than 600 million Spanish and Portuguese speakers worldwide, Johns Hopkins University has released Spanish and Portuguese versions of the course on Coursera. These translations come as confirmed cases continue to increase in many Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries, including Mexico, Peru, Colombia, and Brazil.
The five-hour course, which was originally created with support from Bloomberg Philanthropies, teaches contact tracing fundamentals, including virus basics, interview strategies and simulations, communication skills, and ethical considerations. The course has had more than 500,000 enrollments and 200,000 completions so far.
The new, translated versions feature subtitles, readings, quizzes, and descriptions in either Spanish or Portuguese. All versions of the course are open and free to anyone interested in contact tracing.
“Contact tracing is a tool that can be used across the world to control the spread of coronavirus. This collaboration will bring the Johns Hopkins course to many more people working to save lives in their communities,” said Josh Sharfstein, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Vice Dean for Public Health Practice and Community Engagement.
Coursera, in collaboration with globally recognized institutions such as Johns Hopkins University and Bloomberg Philanthropies, is committed to providing individuals and organizations with relevant, accessible online learning. Sign up for or share the Spanish or Portuguese course today.
