Huawei Scoops 5 GLOMO Awards at MWC 2021

Huawei was the biggest winner of this year’s Global Mobile (GLOMO) Awards at Mobile World Congress 2021 (MWC21) in Barcelona, scooping up 5 awards in 4 categories.

This continues the winning streak in previous years, with Huawei taking home 6 awards in 2020 and 5 awards in 2019. The GLOMO Awards are one of the tech industry’s most prestigious international accolades, judged by the sector’s most prominent experts and thought leaders.

Let’s take a look at the 5 award-winning products and projects, how they benefited the partners that implemented them, and the positive impact they made to the communities that use them.

1. Best Mobile Network Infrastructure

Why: Simplifying base station deployment and maintenance

Under the category of Mobile Tech, Huawei’s compact BladeAAU Series won the award for ‘Best Mobile Network Infrastructure’.

The Mobile Tech category recognizes companies that are ‘revolutionizing the capabilities and reach of mobile and digital technology’.

The Blade AAU series has been deployed around the world, simplifying site installation of network base stations and allowing operators to offer all frequency bands and standards (2G, 3G, 4G, 5G) on a single pole at the same time.

For its space efficient design allowing installations in confined spaces, the Blade AAU Pro also won the ‘Red Dot Design Award’ and ‘iF Design Award’ last year.

The judges commended its compact form factor and low cost of ownership:

This stands out as a vital enabler for operators deploying 5G, ensuring support for commercially important spectrum in the years to come in a single form factor that reduces CAPEX and OPEX costs. Wide scale global deployment of the product in more than thirty networks provides evidence of market momentum and broad positive impact on 5G deployment.

2. Best Mobile Innovation for Connected Economy

Why: Accelerating intelligent, cleaner energy consumption

In the Industry X category, China Southern Power Grid (CSPG), China Mobile and Huawei won the award for ‘Best Mobile Innovation’ for their 5G-inspired smart grid project.

The Industry X category recognizes brands that ‘are winning in creating services that are at the forefront of the shift to fuse the boundaries between physical and digital’.

CSPG, China Mobile, and Huawei launched a cutting-edge 5G wireless communication network to enable a new level of intelligence, data security and quality of service for electric power grid applications.

As the world’s first commercial 5G private WAN for the electric power industry, the project serves as a milestone for the digital transformation of CSPG.

3. Best Mobile Innovation for Emerging Markets

Why: Enabling digital inclusion in rural and remote areas

In the Tech4Good category, Huawei won 2 awards, the first for its RuralStar Pro digital inclusion solution for remote areas with poor network coverage.

The Tech4Good category was created to applaud companies who ‘work tirelessly to ensure that no one gets left behind in the journey to true connectivity’.

Powered by pure green energy, the industry’s first integrated access and backhaul solution — the new RuralStar Pro connectivity solution — was deployed in a rural area of Guizhou, China, enabling new digital opportunities on a fast and reliable telecommunications infrastructure.

RuralStar base stations have been installed at 20,000 remote sites in more than 60 countries due to its fast deployment time and easy maintenance.

The judges agreed:

A great example of how different technologies are combined and optimized to address the specific challenges of rural deployments, with huge potential across developing countries.

4. Outstanding Mobile Contribution to the UN SDGs

Why: Protecting endangered animals and ecosystems with bioacoustics Guardian devices

The second award in the Tech4Good category, was for the Rainforest Connection (RFCx) and Huawei’s Nature Guardian acoustic alert system, which has been deployed around the world to monitor natural ecosystems by recognizing the sound of poaching and illegal logging.

The Nature Guardian solution comprises of small solar-powered devices equipped with microphones and antennas that collect and then transmit sound data through wireless networks to the cloud, where it is analyzed by AI-powered analytics. Each Guardian device is placed in the forest’s canopy and can operate 24 hours a day for two years, collecting ambient sound data over an area of three square kilometers.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by the United Nations as a call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

The judges said:

A great combination of leveraging mobile networks and innovative data usage for the development of a highly scalable and sustainable solution which reflects the purpose of the UN’s Sustainability.

5. Best Innovation for COVID-19 Pandemic Response & Recovery

Why: Enabling safe and effective remote hospital treatments

In the Outstanding Achievement category, Huawei was recognized with the award for Best Innovation for COVID-19 Pandemic Response & Recovery for its innovative indoor 5G telemedicine solution at the China-Japan Friendship Hospital in Beijing.

The Outstanding Achievement category recognizes those who seek to serve the world ‘with their passion, innovation and resources to better our community’.

During the coronavirus outbreak in China, Huawei’s 5G digital indoor network and 5G smart healthcare applications enabled physicians to conduct remote consultations, examinations, and ultrasounds, helping them to efficiently treat COVID-19 patients.

This helped balance the shortage of specialists and minimized their travel between hospitals, hence reducing the risks of cross-infection.
